Depression does not occur by choice or option. But, situations, stress or trauma can invite depressive thoughts to capture the mind. It is very important to take care of one’s own thoughts and sort out which are happy and which are sad and which can be depressive in nature.
It is hence quite necessary to keep the good thoughts in mind and put other thoughts at the back of the mind.
There exist some ways to put depressive thoughts behind the memory at the beginning stage. Some of them are listed below:
- Staying healthy
Recovering from depression is not easy as it spells. Research reads that 50 percent of people who had a history of a depressive episode is more likely to face yet another episode with the severity of symptoms and family history.
Hence staying healthy becomes mandatory in this regard.
Exercising is one of the best remedies to keep off depression from the body. Research reads that exercise acts as an antidepressant and an antidote for depression.
As also, exercise lightens depression and cognitive behavioural therapy or antidepressants.A combination of resistance and aerobic exercises, yoga or meditation, are very helpful for the body.
- Positive attitude or optimism in life
Seeing your glass as half full than half empty shall improve your thoughts and invite optimism in the mind. Research reads that antidepressants and cognitive behavioural therapies are not universal for everyone and one’s attitude and thoughts matter a lot for getting healed.
- Taking care of the health
Research reads that those who take care of their health are more likely to avoid depression at the beginning stages than later.
Depression is associated with the greater risk of heart diseases and diabetes and it has been found that people with high medical illnesses have a higher risk of depression than others.
Hence it is important to take care of one’s health in an appropriate manner.
- Keeping off big decisions
It is good to take decisions but not every decision can give mental and internal peace, big and major decisions can give mental stress and lead to depression.
It is hence advised clinically that, one should make decisions only when the mind is calm and stable and not under pressure.
And taking big decisions, good or bad under pressure shall only invite depression and not happiness.
- Stopping blaming one self
Blaming oneself continuously for the past or present or for factors which are real or imagined shall not help much and lead only to depression and no other such factor.
One should only think that past is past, and there is no time machine that one can use to reverse it. Hence, no regrets.
- Watch what you are eating
Along with exercise, it is important to watch what one should eat. Research reads that a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids and folic acids with minimum fats can help in fighting over depression.
As also veggies, fruits, nuts, whole grains and fish help in combatting depression.
- Treatment is not bad
One should take treatment and doctor’s advice if one has had a history of a depressive episode and has higher chances of its occurrence back in the body.
Immediate halting of medication and treatment should only be done with doctor’s advice and no one else.
Being a volunteer at events may not only increase the socializing abilities but also avoid depression to seep in the mind and the body.
One can either become a volunteer at a blood donation camp or a marathon or even a cycle race. Volunteering gives a lot more peace and happiness and keeps off depression from the mind.
- Alcohol, drugs and other substance abuse
Alcohol can be taken moderately, but excess of anything is bad for the health and the mind, especially depression in this case.
As also drugs and other substance abuse give rise to anxiety pangs or panic attacks and invite depression to sink in. Hence, substance abuse of any kind should be self-prohibited.
